Dear Dok:

Your letter of January 2nd received while I was away.

I note with pleasure what you have to say in regard to the work
of the military unit at Halifax, also Colonel Bell's letter. Lester
Hart says the A.P. would not use such a letter, would not consider it
news, however I think it appeared in the Portland papers. I think
such letters would better be sent to this office as we have several
reporters here every day getting news for the press throughout the
State and they could be better distributed from here than Brunswick.

You most admirably size up Cragin, I have known him from a boy. 
Think we should go right along and pay no attention to him whatever.
At the meeting of the Council when you make your report I want Dr.
Harris and Dr. Bradbnury and if possible three or four other leading
surgeons around here to come in to back up our plan for a field hos-
petal. I know Dr. Harris is very much in favor of it, also Dr. Brad-
bury, and Dr. Stubbs of this city, also Dr. O'Copnnor. Don't you think
we could get Dr. Thayer from Portland to come down and speak for us.
You know him very well, take the matter up with him and see if you can
get him interested.

It seems that Dr. Tom Foster of Portland has left town for good.
While Dr. Bradbury was conducting the physical examinations there he had
a young man assist him whom he recommends very highly and I think he is
going to take the matter up with you. Look him up if he is the man
we want and if Tom is be away we would better appoint him as a medical
officer for the 3rd Maine.

I am returning your letters you sent me to read. As soon as the
next Council meeting is announced I will let you know.

In reading over the resolutions I was rather disgusted that they 
should have gone on so much in regard to the Massachusetts relief and
the Red Cross when really we were on the second train to reach Halifax.
Do you think it would be wise to call Bell's attention to this and see
if it can be corrected? Do as you think best.
