I am this day in 
rec't of your esteemed favour of the 2nd inst
informing me that you had done me
the honor to appoint me to the command
of the 7th Regt. Me. Vol.  I had already
received an unofficial notice of it
through Mr. Blaine.

I feel deeply sensible of that 
compliment paid me, and wish to
thank you most sincerely for it,
but my connection with the Second
Regt thus far has been so agreeable
that I cannot make up my 
mind to break it while the regiment
