The Regt started on the 2d of September by the morning train for Boston Mass where we arived about three o'clock P.M.

We marched from depot to the wharf where the transport Marrymack [Merrimack] lay waiting for us. We went on board and soon after the 36th Mass Regt came on board the same craft twelv hundred strong, which finished to pack the transport to its utmost capacity. Pedlers came on board to sell goods when one of the boys of our regt bot a cigar and handed the pedler a $5 bill, the pedler handed him the box with a few cigars in it and steped one side in the crowd to get the chnage and was seen no more. On the evening we wer laid off into the stream to wait until morning before starting on our way.

September 3d We put out to sea under sealed orders, no one onboard knowing where we wer to land, and no one knowing that they wer ever to see home and friends again. One can but imagine their feelings as they watched the land as
