Here we are once more back within a stones throw of our first encampment in Virginia. I took dinner in the room below on the tenth day of July last. Now to explain. Night before last orders came for us to march back to Alexandria, surprising and pleasing us at the same time. Three regiments went by rail. The Maine 5th however had to march the entire distance forty miles which was accomplished in a day and a half. The General and staff accompanied them on horse back. We made Fairfax Court House our head quarters for last evening.
