Wednesday 11th October 1820 Wind S.E. commenced raining at day light and continued until half past 4 p.m. when it cleared, and wind changed to S.W. and at 10 p.m. commenced raining again till 12 midnight. - remain here.- Thursday 12th October cloudy and cold morning. We find the water has risen in the River 6 inches, we embark and head up River at 8 a.m. 1/2 mile to the Grand Portage- we land on the S.W. side. Messrs. H &N carry the baggage and canoes across the Portage which they say is 3 1/2 miles, and describe it as follows in 1 mile spruce and mixed low land near the River crossing a stream on which is a small pond near the road- then rising and winding up a steep hard wood rocky Mtn. 3/4 mile, then level hard wood land, 1/4 mile- then up a steep spruce hill 1/2 mile then descending same 1/4 mile. Cedar swamp 1/4 mile then descending good hard wood land 1/4 mile to the foot of len ga mock Pond.
