Q. What has been your own observation as to the care with which the patients are treated by the attendants?

A. I think there may be some difference, think there are some attendants there that are much better than others. I think it is necessary to combine intelligence, watchfulness, care and strength to make a good attendant. I called Dr. Harlow's attention at one time to the matter and he was very kind to go over the list with me, and give me so information in regards to the attendants, those he considered good and those he had discharged, he seemed to be quite willing to do it; it seemed to me that he possessed that information that the superintendent of  a hospital ought to possess  in order to understand the qualifications of those he had under him. I asked how many he had discharged during the year and he gave me a list of  the names, some 7 or 8 if my memory serves me right, during last year.
