I Ebenezer Webster hereby certify that the timber marked [symbol inserted] marking Iron E IIII [?] chalk[?] a few sticks marked with a I.W.P. about four hundred sticks was cut on No. 8 Township in the 8th range West from the East line of the State cut & hauled by Faley, Gardner & others, for Taylor, Webster & Pilsbury, For which we had a legal permit and to which myself & partners have a legal title according to the laws of the State of Maine.

And I further certify that there is not in this lot of timber, any other timber whatsoever other than the timber cut on the aforesaid Township as above stated.

[K inside a diamond] marking Iron with the exception of 103 sticks was cut upon No. 9, 7th range townships west East line of the State and belonging to Massachusetts, for which I had a legal permit and to which timber myself & partners have a legal title according to the laws of the State of Maine and I further certify that there is not in this lot of timber any other timber whatsoever other than the timber cut on the aforesaid township as above stated with the exception of the one hundred & three sticks which were cut on No. 8 in the 8th range of townships as aforesaid, being one of the undivided Townships

Smith & Samuel[?] Harvey hereby certify that the timber marked S X I I B & S X H IX with marking Iron and [?] with black paint was cut on No 9, 5th range west from the East line of the State – For which we had a legal permit and unto which we have a legal title according to the laws of the State of Maine – and we further certify that there is not in this lot of timber any other timber whatsoever other than the timber cut on the aforesaid township as above stated

The timber from the permitted townships began to come to the boom yesterday and Col. Webster gave me on his arrival here a certificate of the marks etc a copy of which is here enclosed. He will also be required to give a bond that the statement is correct and that no other timber shall pass as his through the boom a copy of the bond is also enclosed I thought that this would be a better course than having an affadavit [affidavit] annexed to the Statement even if the Justice of the Peace was here – you will see by the bond that it is necessary to have the scalers return of the timber in order that we may know how many sticks were sealed, I have for this purpose sent to Mr. Ingersoll Jr. Esq. Clerk at Houlton for such as they have this course I hope will meet your approbation.

As the timber is not rafted I apprehend much trouble in getting through the permitted timber without letting some other pass. In case I find this difficulty to exist, I shall stop all timber until I receive further instructions from you rafting out meanwhile as much of the permitted timber as possible.
