Cary & Mr Shields of Houlton have been off the town- ship on which they were permitted and trespassed in an adjoining township that that timber is mixed in with the rest under these circumstances I shall unless ordered otherwise stop all their timber.

I have sent two men to St. Croix and instructions to Mr Little to go with them and find on what township & to what extent that trespass has been committed. My information is derived from a young man who worked with them who appears to be very ignorant of the lines but who says that Mr. C. told the men that if there was any trouble he would pay the stumpage etc and that Shields told them if they saw any good timber to shut their eyes if they came to a line. Two certificates were taken of the same from one for the Massachusetts timber and one for the undivided timber owned jointly by the two States and varying only in that respect, and the [?] I suppose that a copy of both is not necessary as the originals will be sent as soon as this bong is executed to your office. A letter from Capt. Nye was rec'd yesterday the original is enclosed and a copy taken here.

I shall be greatly obliged to you if you will furnish the bearer of this Mr. Powers with a light canoe to go to St. Croix - will be back probably the last

of the week.  The expense will be cheerfully paid or if 

one could be purchased proper for two men of small [?] to go in I will see you paid for it.

Sir I wish you to go with the two men sent with this or in case you cannot go to send a trusty man and

examine the township. Mr. Cary and others lumbered upon this last winter and see if trespass has been committed and to what extent and upon what townships & range.

Information has been given me that such has been the case there and the object of this is to find out by whom, when & what amount has been taken.

Sunday 30. Jonathan Powers and another man was sent to St. Croix to examine certain logging roads, for details see letter to Mr. Little of this date. Lucius Prince was sent to Houlton with letters. Smith & Harvey reported a quantity of timber for detail see their certificate of this date. Men employed on block house & boom.

Wednesday May 1st. Raining afternoon. Gardner arrived and reported a lot of logs cut part of all marked with red chalk E IIII four sticks, four stripes marked with red chalk. Dr. Mason arrived with Mr. Thompson, brought 313 dollars from Mr. Strickland. PM Rufus Moody again intoxicated and was discharged for that cause. A letter rec'd from J. Pollard regarding a lot of timber cut under his direction on [9?] in the 4th Range marked GXMS without permit. Men employed as yesterday.
