Agreeably to assignment, the Senate, on their part, proceeded to the choice of Senator from this State in the Congress of the United States to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of the Hon. Peleg Sprague. Messrs. Bartlett, Farnham and Latham were appointed a Committee to receive, sort and count the votes; who, having attended the duties assigned them, reported that the whole number of votes is 23. Necessary to a choice 12. John Ruggles has 17. George Evans " 6. John Ruggles was declared duly elected Senator to fill the vacancy aforesaid, in concurrence with the House of Representatives. The Senate also proceeded, on their part, to the choice of a Senator from this State in the Congress of the United States for the term of six years, from and after the third day of March next. And Messrs. Brown, O'Brien and Miller were appointed a Committee to receive, sort and count the votes; who, having attended the duties assigned them, reported that the whole number of votes is 23. John Ruggles has 17, George Evans " 6. John Ruggles was declared duly elected Senator in the Congress of the United States for six years from & after the third day of March next, in concurrence with the House of Representatives.
