The President being absent the Senate was called to order by the Secretary.

On motion of Mr Clark. Ordered, that the Senate now proceed to elect a President pro tem, and that a Committee of three be appointed to receive, sort and count the votes.

Messrs. Clark, Severance and Allen were appointed a Committee to receive, sort and count the votes for President pro. tem. Which Committee, having attended to the duties assigned them, reported that the whole number of votes given in was 23 Necessary to a choice 12. John C. Talbot has 21. Alexander McIntire 1. Samuel P. Benson 1. and one Blank. Which report was read and accepted and John C. Talbot was declared duly elected. He signified his acceptance by an address and took the Chair.

Mr Secretary: Being called upon to undertake the duties of presiding at this Board, was, until very recently, quite unexpected. However, I am not insensible to this mark of distinction. Gentlemen of the Senate: Permit me to tender to you my grateful thanks for the honor confered on me by the vote you have just given. I am not accustomed to presiding over deliberative Assemblies,
