Two outstanding projects of the Commission are the publication of two handbooks:

"The Legal Rights of Maine Women" by Judy Potter, Professor of Law, University of Maine School of Law, published in 1977. "This booklet was written to help Maine women to recognize and enforce their rights under Maine and Federal law. It is not designed to be a substitute for lawyers services, but to inform women of their legal rights so that they will know when to consult a lawyer or a governmental agency for assistance in enforcing these rights";

"The Handbook for and About Working Women in Maine", researched by Marilyn (Jo) Josephson, published in 1978 by the Maine Commission for Women in conjunction with the Department of Manpower Affairs. This handbook helps women to identify who the working women are, where they are working, where the jobs are, and the advantages or disadvantages in particular areas of the job market. An important section of this handbook offers a "Working Woman's Address book".

Both publications are available through the office of the Maine Commission for Women, State Office Building, Room 503, Augusta, Maine 04333 or call 289-3418. A donation of $1.00 per booklet is asked to cover postage and handling.

WHAT IS THE COMMISSION DOING -

The Commission has received funding from the 109th Legislature for the first time in its existence. This funding will enable the Commission to hire staff which will assist them to fulfill their legislative mandate.

Our goals are to represent all the women of Maine and to hear directly from them as to what are their concerns.

On January 12 , 1980 in Portland and January 26, 1980 in Bangor, the Commission will sponsor a non-partisan workshop for women interested in becoming involved politically. This workshop is customarily called "Winning With Women".
