Dear Sir  Yours of the 9th was Recd  I have written to Capt. Tilden [?] about my sons appointment and I hope you will not appoint any other to that place before you can hear from him.

It will be a popular appointment and he writes he can get any amount of Reccomendations as I believe he can and I hope you will be satisfyed he is the [underlined] man for that place.  Mr. Mudgett will make a good Captain he is First Lieut. now and George L. Burman [?] is 2d t Lieut. and Captain Tilden [?] told me when he was at home that he was above [?] where he should be now and the orderly J.H. Collins is a poor schollar  he cannot spell one word in ten Right  Charles and others have had to do his writing for him
