During the time I have had the honor to preside over this Board, I have constantly received from all its members, kindness, indulgence and respect, from men older and abler than myself. Unintentional errors I have doubtless committed; but it has been my good fortune to be surrounded by gentlemen, who possessed the ability, and the inclination to prevent such errors from becoming injurious to the public interests. If I have succeeded in performing the duties of the Chair in a manner to meet your approbation, the success is to be mainly attributed to your prompt aid, and your friendly cooperation in my honest endeavors to do right, and the favor of an over ruling Providence. If on the great variety of business, that has engaged the attention of this Board, difference of opinion has sometimes existed, it is gratifying to know, that that difference has not disturbed our humors, nor resulted in personal animosity; on the contrary, while deliberating on important public business, ties of personal friendship have been formed, and sentiments of mutual respect been promoted. Liberal feelings and candid discussion have allayed sectional jealousies and smothed down party asperities. If we have not accomplished all we could have wished, or all that may have been expected of us; we may believe that some good to the people will result from the Acts of the present Legislature. In retiring (probably forever) from the station I have here occupied, I shall entertain toward you all, sentiments of respect and affectionate esteem. And I am sure you will all join me, in the hope, that our successors, to whom may be intrusted the public interests of our large, flourishing and beloved State, may be more distinguished for high attainments, eminent
