Instructions
To Joseph C Norris & Andrew McMillan
The Commissioners under the act for the Separation of Maine from Massachusetts authorized to divide the land belonging to the two States having determined in part execution of the trust reposed in them, during the present year to cause all the undivided & unlocated land lying Southerly of a monument erected by Commissioners of the United States & Great Britain on the Eastern boundary of said State of Maine at the source of the St Croix river to be surveyed & laid out into townships, do hereby appoint you to make the following part of such survey, in doing which you will conform yourself to the instructions following to wit, from the said monument you will run a due west line so far West as to include all the undivided land within said State lying South thereof at the end of twelve miles West of said monument you will run a due South line until it strikes the North line of the ninth range & then return to carry out the West line. This line you will be careful to have accurately marked out, & correctly run making mile marks, at the end of each mile West of said Monument & make such marks as to distinguish the end of each six miles, as that is designed not only to be the basis of the surveys to be made by you, but also of future surveys of the residue of the undivided land. You will ascertain & notice the variation of the compass on this line & state the course that you actually run & the time of performing it. After having established said
