When I left home last fall I thought that we should so for quell the Rebellion by this time, that I should return to Maine, Consequently I left my business in an unsettled state, my business has been going down hill until now, it does not pay, and as the Rebellion still continues and will probably for sometime and I do not want to leave the Army until it is finished, I want to return to Maine for a few days, to close my business. I think this is due to my wife and family, besides it will leave ( ? ) to give my whole attention to military and to be their to close up my business will be greatly to my advantage in a ( ? ) point of view, I think that through you I can obtain a leave of absence for 15 or so days to settle up matters. or if you and Col Chaplain would like I would like to take a Captains position in his Regt, if nothing better offered.  I think the Col would like one Capt.  that has been under fire although the position would be harder than my position here, still to get my business closed it will relive me of quite an anxiety and I would like to serve under-
