[page 697] Testimony of Mrs. G.W. Quimby, sworn. Mr. Chairman and gentlemen of the committee. I ask the privilege by virtue of the office that I hold as trustee of making a statement. I came before this committee once before and gave my reasons for dissenting from my associates; of course I should not be expected to repeat that, and I thought it proper that I might be allowed to make this statement. In my connection with the hospital from the first, as one of the visiting committee and now as trustee. I consider myself as one of the protectors of the rights of the insane, and in this investigation this is the leading principle governing me. As I listened to the facts which have been revealed here, wholly unknown to one before, it felt, as one of the trustees in whom a trust had been reposed, and which I had taken the oath to carry out to the best of my ability, I had become more anxious for the interest of those unfortunate ones and more desirous that the whole truth shall be elicited. If any of these cases of abuse have occurred, as has been stated here, be they ever so few in comparison to the many which might have occurred, and as I believe, without the knowledge of the officers, may there not be a repetition of the same if we as guardians of these helpless ones are not determined that not the slightest
