Wednesday [underline]. Morning 13th Oct. '52. I put 2 sheets in the P. Office for you this morning. I have been considering, Zadoc, that I write too [double underline] much to [double underline] you (Mark how, to [underline], & too [underline], are spelled [underline], one as a preposition [underline], & the other as an adverb [underline].) & too [underline] much on the pleasant side of things, [start underline] at home [end underline], that I keep you too [underline] much in the mind of my too [underline] highly colored pictures, & thus [carrot] increase your homesickness. Don't you think it may be so? You see, I [underline] feel the vibration of that electrical chord, we have talked about, as much as you [underline], & there may be [start carrot] between us [end carrot] an intercommunication of tenderness & sadness that out not to be, that is unbecoming our manhood. This is a rough world, if we make the best of it, & we must temper our selves to it. We must brace up our hears to bear with proper fortitude many blows that must be inflected, & many sorrows that cannot be escaped. We are progressive [underline] beings, as I told you the other day, & must not suffer our minds to linger too [underline] much on what is past, but must look forward, &, making a wise improvement of the present, [start underline] hope for the better things to come [end underline]. I spoke of my too highly coloured pictures of home [underline]. Let me give you one, now [underline], without any paint or varnish. Rose before sunrise - the weather cloudy & chilly & depressing - ground wet & muddy. Had so much to do that I couldn't stop to shave. Fed the hogs who were squealing for their swill. Cleaned out the horse. Milked the cows in the cold damp yard, surounded with fresh manure, [the?] milk bags well
