Numerous friends here of the 2nd Maine Regiment, knowing the interest you have always taken in its welfare, and knowing your determination to have it filled up with good able men, have suggested me to call your attention to the subject which I do with great reluctance, knowing how much you are pressed with important business at this time.

We feel that arrangements should be made immediately to have it filled up, as it will take some time to enlist 500 good, suitable men to fill up a broken regiment, but with a little energy, it can be done quite soon. Nearly a quota a company I am told, can be enlisted in the town of Hampden. Col. Porter of Lowell, who will be elected to legislature tomorrow I think, has often told me that he could raise a good company in his representative district. He has been a military man, and I think it would be well to let him enlist all the good men he can find up soon. I have not said anything to him upon the subject, but name it for your consideration.
