Tuesday. Oct. 19. 1952 Pleasant after the storm. About the middle of last night, we were waked by a severe tempest of lightning + thunder + rain. The flashes were most vivid + terrific, + the instantaneous discharges of heavan's artillery extremely stunningly [underlined] sublime: altogether more startling for being out of the season, + at such an hour of the night. I generally sleep in a night tempest there being something, I think, in the atmosphere, that makes one drowsy, but I did not sleep last night during the tempest.
Zadoc, I must have subjects for my fragments + long communications. Seeing John Davis, about, this morning, with a pair [underlined] of your cast [underlined] off thick boots on, so large and loose that they would slip off his legs if he were high enough from the ground, suggests to my mind Economy [underlined] as a subject for this page.
