I think the financial management would compare well with that of any institution that I have known or read about. At the time I made this examination I think I did not find but one hospital that the charge were so small as ours. Previous to about 1870 the hospital was in debt, every year for many years from one to four thousand dollars, the treasurer owed money at the bank in Augusta and the hospital paid the interest. Since 1872 there have been great improvements made at the hospital from money received from the patients without calling upon the state for aid , such as purchase of a piece of land
