[James L. Child Esq elected Clerk]
On motion, Ordered that Messrs Abbot of Castine, Williams of Augusta, Perley Bridgton, Quinnam of Wiscasset and Fox of Parsonsfield be a committee to receive, sort and count the votes for a Clerk - and the votes being counted it appeared that James L Child, Esquire of Alna was unanimously chosen. He appeared and signified his acceptance of that office and an oath in the following words was administered to him by the chairman - to wit : "I James L Child do swear, that I will faithfully discharge to the best of my abilities, the duties incumbent on me as Clerk of the House of Representatives, according to the Constitution and Laws of the State. So help me God.

On motion, Ordered, that Messrs McCobb of Phippsburg, Emery of Biddeford, Pike of Frankfort, Chase of Livermore, and Lewis of Athens be a Committee to receive, sort and count the votes for Speaker - and the votes being counted it appeared the whole number given in was 124 - necessary to a choice 63 - Benjamin Ames Esquire the member from Bath, having 120 was declared chosen. He signified his acceptance on taking the chair in a neat and appropriate speech.
