in to letter D, it starts a NW course and bears[?] round west, we found the timber [?] scatering [scattering] which caused many branches, one branch [?] the south line of D I surveyed all the timber found

The result, -Cut last winter and hauled 27,896 –[Cut last winter and] left 7,932 –Damage last winter 35,828 –Cut two or three years since 4,837[?]

Arrived at the Fort 1/2 past 5 Oclock, Mess Buffum & Powers found no timber

Sir

Mr Smith of Houlton persist in coming[?] onto this territory with provisions to lumber the following goods were issued to wit

He has gone to Houlton for the purpose of replevin them & has left his crew here to go on as soon as he returns with his writs &c He intends to go on to Letter I Shall[?] he be taken off by force or his provisions be again seised [seized] – as I do not know what course would be best I shall await your instructions upon this point The letters of the Regt[?] Q Master General date Oct 3 & Mr [?] of Oct 16 were received yesterday and will be answered immediately

According to my instructions of Oct 30, 1839, I left the Fort at 2 of the lcock PM same day for D Fairbanks, On arriving there Mess Towle Johnson & others in the employ of the State accompanyd [accompanied] me to receive the provisions in the hands of Henry Smith, we proceeded to the to the two mile Brook where Smiths party had camped, On making my business acquainted to Mr Smith, he forbid me taking his provisions saying he had a permit from the Land Agent of Massacs[?], and that they were for the purpose of lumbering on Township letter J[?].

I took what provisions I could find in the name of the State and by instructions from Wm P Parrott Depy Land Agt except leaving a small quantity of each kind, to sustain his men for three or four days, Mr Smiths crew consisted of six men,
