My Dear Governor

I hear that Dr. Barker has resigned as Surgeon of the 7th. Dr. A.C. Hamlin won't like the position, and says that many of the officers are anxious he should have it.

Since I came here Dr. H. and myself have been on perfectly friendly terms so far as I know. He has treated me with kindness and courtesy, and never refused to do any thing I requested him as to assisting in my duties. Being sick at Washington about two weeks, recently, I found the regiment in good condition on my return. I think Dr. H. fully competent to perform the duties of Surgeon & have no doubt should he be appointed to the position, might perform them acceptably. I am satisfied that certain rumors against Dr. H's courage
