Genl. John L. Hodsdon Adjt. General of State of Maine
Dear General
I returned from Annapoles last evening where I had been to spend Sunday & the 4th with General Chamberlain, his wound is a very severe one and a very dangerous one, the surgeons are by no means certain of saving(underlined) his life, the ball passed through the lower part of the abdomen and severed the unethra so near the bladder that by no artificeal means can all the urine be conducted from the bladder without some of it escaping and passing out through the wound at the opening, which is on the right side of the right leg, two inches below the hip joint. It is feared that ulcers will form in the abdomen & terminate his life-
