DearSir,

You may recollect that I spoke to you in regard to our J. F. Ballard, now in Jail, claimed as having enlisted in the 4th Battery. He has never been mustered into the Service, and says he did not knowingly enlist having been Stupified by drugged liquor when the enlisting officer accidentally came acrost him.

[following underlined] I suggested that the past would be forgotten if he would no go into the Service, [underlining stops] but he declines to do it.

Is it not better now to discharge him? I think I can make him appreciate it as a favor. Very respectfully yours T. M. Bradbury
