accompanied by a negro who had escaped from a plantation in that vicinity went over to the main captured two or three men stationed on pickets and brought off about 30 negroes. While there they were attacked by some Rebel Cavalry. Capt. Whitney shot the Rebel officer in command and several [unclear] were Killed.
The Rebels were led to
the spot by blood hounds that had been put on the back of the negroes.
Nearly all of the dogs were
killed.
