Rained all day. Mr. Baker arrived last night, and reported this morning that Capt. Nye had driven off a gang of trespassers with Mr M Laughlin at their[?] head who with thirty[?] set off down river to procure reinforcements &c and expressed his opinion that a reinforcement should be sent to Nye, under these circumstances Capt. Turner was directed to proceed forthwith to Fish River to the assistance of Capt. Nye, which he and they refused to go.

Pleasant. Capt. Bartlett with twenty five men was sent to reinforce Capt. Nye on Fish River.

Sir

you are hereby authorised [authorized] and instructed to proceed with a detachment of twenty five men from your company with all practible[practicable?] dispatch to the post of the civil force on the Fish river where you will report to Capt. Alvin Nye with your men under your command. In the execution of the detail of this duty you will use your own discretion and I would recommend that you consult with Mr John Baker[?] who will be with you and whose opinion of the route will be good authority to you, and whose intimate knowledge of the country Qualified him to give advice of the greatest importance to you.

Your operations after your arrival on Fish River will be referred to the instructions to Capt. Nye which in case of his absence or disability you will take and carry into effect, - you will draw on Mack Little Esq. at St. Croix for the necessary provisions &[?] stores[?] for your command

Sir

At the suggestion of Mr Baker[?] and in consequence of the report received by him from you, I have directed Capt. Thomas Bartlett [?] to proceed to Fish River with twenty five men and report himself and command to you at this place

In addition to the instructions given to you by Col Jarvis I hardly know what to give but send to you the instructions recd. by me from the Land Agent, for your guidance in matters in which you may have doubt. I regret, I cannot forward to you a copy of the resolve of the 24th of January but I have no copy here.

I would recommend to you that strict camp rules and regulations should be observed and that your[?] real[?] strength should not be known. With regard to another post, on or near the St. John’s which has been suggested by Mr Baker I must leave the whole to your discretion, I would also suggest the expediency of having a boat constantly kept on each side of the Machias Portage in order to communicate with the least possible delay
