Hon. H. Hamlin,

         I think that the appointment

of W. Seth Smith of Calais. to the Office of Agent for the Tribe of Passamaquoddy Indians. would be entirely Satisfactory to the Republican[s] party in this vicinity. and of the Community at large.

         It is an appointment. which in

my opinion. from motives of humanity toward the Indians, should not be made from political Considerations alone. The office requires a man [?], of capacity, of prudence, and of humanity,- one who takes a lively interest in them from other them selfish motives.

         It has been my fortune to have
