Now, it will be asked here, why then, with all the talk made about the hospital, do you keep her there? Well, there are 3 reasons. One is this: That I may be near her whether she lives or dies; whether she is sane or insane. That I may be near her any way. Another reason is that she has these good attendants who, I believe, are treating her nightly. And there are many who will do that. Some of these men who have been here will do that. And then in the third place, from a dire necessity over which I have no control even if wished to remove her. I am bound by that necessity hand and foot; and I frankly say I believe my wife is well taken care of there. When I entered into this investigation I had no earthly expectation except to do this.
