Castine Sept 25 1861

Dear Sir Mr Luther T[?] Mudgett of Stockton and now in Company B, 2d Castine[?] Reg would like to have a commission as Lieutenant in the 8th Reg if he can get one my son[?] writes that he is a first rate man brave and sturdy[?] and I know him well enough to Recommend him for a place of that kind (which I do) and if you can do anything for him please do it
