Head Quarters Fort Corcoran 2nd Regt Maine Volunteers
Sept 19th, 1861
Dear Sir
Quarter Master, Lieut, C.F. Lord having resigned and received his discharge from the service, I have this day appointed to fill the vacancy Sam'l W Hoskins of Old Town. His commission I should like sent to him immediately. Please use all the means in your power to recruit my regiment as owing to many whom I have on account of incurable diseases been obliged to discharge, my force is gradually getting very small. In the next engagement, I should like to bear if possible a respectable part. I think the raising of a cavalry regiment in Maine rather a humbug. The horses will be good but the riders poor for at least a year to come, and for one I should during one of their charges keep at a very respectable distance. Infantry properly armed or if possible light artillery are of the most service.
Very Respectfully Yours in Haste,
Chas. W Roberts, Col.
