4 [1825 January 5] [Message] A message was then received from the House informing that they had elected John Ruggles Esq. Speaker and James L. Child Esq. Clerk, and were ready to proceed to business.

[Secretary chosen] The Senate then proceeded to the choice of a Secretary, the whole number of Votes given was Twenty - necessary for a choice Eleven, and Charles B. Smith had twelve, and was declared elected. he then signified his acceptance and took and subscribed the oaths required by the Constitution to qualify him to discharge the duties of that office, before Horatio Southgate Esq. thereto authorized by Dedimus Potestatem, in presence of the Senate.

[Message] Mr. Holland was then charged with a Message to the House informing them that the Senate was duly organized by the choice of Jonas Wheeler Esq. President, and Charles B. Smith Secretary.

Mr. Campbell was then charged with a similar message to the Governor and Council.

On motion of Mr. Dunlap, Ordered that when the Senate adjourn, they adjourn to 3 o'clock P.M.

[Committee on Seats] On motion of Mr. Stebbins, Ordered, that Messr. Stebbins, Dunn and Scamman be a Committee to consider and report in what manner the Members shall be seated at the Senate Board.
