222 Report on the order directing an inquiry into the expediency of revising the election laws and embodying them into one act, that legislation is inexpedient the present session, was read and accepted in concurrence with the House

Report on the petition of Nathaniel Dingley and others referring the subject to the next Legislature was read and accepted in concurrence with the Senate.

On motion of Mr Boyd of Harmony

 Ordered that the House proceed by ballot to the election of a Speaker to fill the vacancy occasioned by the resignation of Thomas Davee as a member of this House.

A committee was accordingly raised, consisting of Messrs Woodman of Buxton, Abbot of Vassalboro, Weeks of Jefferson. Hyde of Bath and Webb of Windham to receive, sort, count and report the votes for Speaker - and having attended to the duties assigned them, reported, that the whole number of ballots given was One hundred and seventy eight necessary constitute an election ninety - That Jonathan Cilley had ninety three - Eliakim Scammon had fifty five, John D McCrate had sixteen - Eliphalet Greely had One - Meshac Humprey had four, Charles Jarvis one, Charles Cobb one Blanks seven and the Clerk declared Jonathan Cilley of Thomaston duly elected Speaker of this House

Mr Cilley being present was notified by the Clerk of his election, who thereupon adopted the House as follows:
