The recipient is William King (1768-1852), who was a member of the Massachusetts Senate in 1807-11, and the first Governor of Maine in 1820-21.
The sender is Col. Erastus Foote (1777-1856). He was born in Connecticut, and trained as a lawyer, practicing for a number of years in Camden Maine before relocating to Wiscasset. His military rank was earned in the militia during the War of 1812. He was Maine’s first Attorney General from 1820-1832.
