A new species, Alexandercestus masoumehae n. sp., is described from the sicklefin lemon shark, Negaprion acutidens (Rüppell), from the Iranian coast of the Gulf of Oman. The new species is the third in this genus, all parasitizing species of Negaprion Whitley. Based on morphological characters and scanning electron microscopy the new species is different from its congeners of in a combination of characters including total length, terminal proglottid length, cirrus sac length, and genital pore position. Compared to Alexandercestus gibsoni Ruhnke & Workman, 2013 and A. manteri Ruhnke & Workman, 2013 the specimens of the new species are smaller (7.08-8.5 mm), with a smaller terminal proglottid length to width ratio (10.7-1.3 vs. Selleck Senaparib 1.4-3.21 and 1.2-3.11, respectively), and have a more anterior genital pore (70-73% of proglottid length vs. 42-66% and 41-65%, respectively). In addition, A. masoumehae possesses less foliose bothridia compared with A. gibsoni, and more densely packed vitelline follicles in comparison with A. manteri. The SEM examination of the scolex in the new species reveals a specific pattern of microtriches adding new details in our understanding of the surface morphology of members of Alexandercestus. Finally, the new species increases the total number of described tapeworm species from N. acutidens to five and the described tapeworms in the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman region to 65. © Indian Society for Parasitology 2019.We examined 438 fresh skulls of pine marten (Martes martes) from Germany to check for the presence of the cranial trematode Troglotrema acutum. The parasite was detected in the frontal sinuses of one 3-year-old road-killed male from the Rhoen Mountains (Thuringia). We detected 19 adult T. acutum and 34 eggs. The infested pine martens showed no deformations or lesions of the skull. This is the first time that specimens of the trematode were recovered from a pine marten from Germany, but the low prevalence of 0.23% confirms that the pine marten is only a rare host of T. acutum. © Indian Society for Parasitology 2019.A rapid flow-through immunoassay using protein A labeled gold nanoparticles (GNPs) for the qualitative detection of trypanosomosis in equine serum samples was developed. The flow-through device consisted of antigen-coated nitrocellulose membrane fixed on absorbent pads. The GNPs based detection probe was used as the colored marker. The assay can be employed for the detection of Trypanosoma specific antibodies at 14 days post-infection in the infected pooled serum samples of equines. The assay can be conducted in less then  5 min. The results of the flow-through assay were comparable with the methods like ELISA, dot blot assay and lateral flow assay. The developed assay showed high efficiency for detection of anti-Trypanosoma antibodies in equine sera and can be used for quick screening of serum samples under field conditions. © Indian Society for Parasitology 2019.Giardia intestinalis and Blastocystis spp. are two common zoonotic intestinal parasites responsible for the majority of diarrheic cases, especially in children. The study was planned to determine the impact role of both Giardia and Blastocystis co-infection in children up to 12 years old with acute diarrhea in Beni-Suef, Egypt. Also, to estimate the general prevalence rates and risk factors associated with intestinal parasitic infections. Stool samples collected from 125 children, within a period of 7 months, were examined using direct wet mount and trichrome stain in comparison to in vitro culture on Jones medium (for detecting Blastocystis spp.) and Immunochromatography techniques (for detecting Giardia). At least one type of intestinal parasites was harbored in 72% of the studied children, single infection constituted 37.6% while, 34.4% were polyparasitized children. The predominant parasites involved were Blastocystis spp.(53.6%), followed by Giardia intestinalis (27.2%). Co-infection between both parasites was recorded in 20% of cases. Two risk factors were significantly associated with higher risk of Giardia-Blastocystis co-infection including age category (5-7 years) and family size (≥ 6 members) by univariate analysis (P = 0.004, 0.009 respectively) and also by the multivariate model (OR = 0.526, 0.336). Abdominal pain was the only gastrointestinal manifestation associated with the co-infection using the univariate analysis (P = 0.0427). The present study detects a high prevalence of intestinal parasitic infection; in particular, Giardia-Blastocystis co-infection in diarrheic young children (up to 12 years) in Beni-Suef Governorate, Egypt and recommends further subtypes identification of both parasites. © Indian Society for Parasitology 2019.Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), a clinical condition caused mainly by Leishmania amazonensis in Brazil, is characterized by topical, painless ulcers. The current treatment, based on intravenous administration of pentavalent antimonials, presents low adherence by patients and may cause serious adverse effects, leading to the need for searching new therapeutic options. Thus, this study aimed at evaluating a topical administration of "intelligent dressings" as an alternative treatment for CL. BALB/c mice were infected with L. amazonensis promastigotes. Afterward, lesions were treated with hydrophobic dressings incorporated with clinically used drugs. After lesion development, the following analyses were carried out measurement of lesion diameters, biochemical analyses of serum, evaluation of the recovery of amastigote forms and histological analyses. No significant clinical changes in serum parameters were observed. The group that was treated with dressings impregnated with Glucantime® displayed the lowest number of amastigotes recovered from tissues (parasite load). Conventional treatment with Glucantime® (i.p.) was also able to reduce parasite load. After 6 weeks from the measurement of the lesions mice treated with dressings impregnated with Pentamidine displayed the smallest values. Representative histological aspects of the lesions showed the absence or few amastigotes inside the macrophages when mice were treated with dressings impregnated with Glucantime® and Pentamidine, respectively. The findings presented here indicate that the topical treatments may constitute an alternative treatment option for CL. © Indian Society for Parasitology 2019.
