April 10, 1935 .Miss Rachel L. Field o/o· The .Macmillan Company 60 Fifth Avenue New York City Dear .Miss Field: Some years ago the State Library started an exhibit collection of the works of contemporary Kaine authors. Due to the generosity and cooperation of our authors, this project has had such a success that it now numbers several hundred volumes, all inscribed, and most of them presented by the authors. We found that among those authors not' born 1n. Kaine, but connected with the State - by living here, or writing of Haine settings - there were so many whoni we wished to include that we h_ave broadened the scope of this Maine .Author Collection, to include these writers.'.· ·' Of course Ye sha:11 want your books in our <Jolle j.~ t ion. Our one regret is that we have not had them ·-A, ... before this time. __ Naturally, we would not ask that you make a gift of these many books, but we shall endeavor to· acquire ,thea, and as we do, we hope that you will be kind enough to .autograph them for us.

··

We are hoping, however, that in the meantime you will want to inscribe for the Maine Author ·oollection a copy of your lat est literary work: "Time Out of Kind," which has been receiving such favorable reviews r.eceri~ly. We assure you that we will appreciate your kindness in this matter; and may we wish you continued success in 11 terature. Very truly yours
