We the undersigned petitioners would respectfully represent that we have known Mr. John Sprague for several years and consider him an honest man and well qualified to be Agent for the Passamaquoddy tribe of Indians and that he has lost the use of his left hand and having a large family dependent on him for support and in [moderate?] circumstances the office would be of much service to him and he being one of the leading men of the party in its darkest days and is a staunch republican we would respectfully request you to give him the appointment and in duty bound we will ever pray.
