64 that all Witnesses called to testify before any Committee of the Legislature be first sworn in the same manner as witnesses who testify before Courts of Justice read + passed. Sent up for concurrence.

Petition of Ariel Mann +als Trustees of Hallowell Academy for aid in enabling them to give instruction in French + Spanish came from the Senate referred to the Committee on Literature + Literary Institutions for Concurrence, and the House concurred.

Report on the order of a g#inst directing the committee on the Judiciary to consider the expediency of repealing the 9th sec. of the act to establish the Damariscotta Canal passed March 10 1821, that the committee be discharged from the further consideration of said order, came from the Senate accepted for concurrence and the House concurred.

The Speaker laid before the House a communication from Daniel Rose Esq Warden of the States Prisons transmitting the accounts of that Institution for the year ending Nov. 30 1827 together with his annual report exhibiting the State of the Institution and sundry documents in relation thereto, which on motion was referred to the joint Standing Committee on the States Prison and two hundred + fifty copies ordered to be printed for the use of the Legislature under the direction of the clerk.

Bill establishing Work Houses in the several Counties in this State, reported by a committee of this house, was read once and Friday next at ten oclock assigned for a second reading and three hundred copies ordered to be printed for the use of the Legislature.

Agreeably to assignment the two Houses met in convention, in the Representatives Chamber, and proceeded by ballot to the election of a Treasurer of State. The whole number of ballots given in was one hundred + sixty two. Mark Harris, Esq.
