became interested in the theatre ,and operated the now detunct __ _ 1111810 Jfall of Lewiston for over for't7 7ears,and with this as a bU81ness and investments in real estate,aquired sometb!Vc ot a tortune,and at his death left fifty thousand dollars to build a new wing in the then new hospital in Lewiston. Jfy' sisters eventuall7 moved to Cleveland after the death ot sy mother,the7 married Clleveland •n and settled down to establish their own families,and it was there with them 1n Cletiand that I b,egan 111 st\ldi•s 1n art,on a scholarship ,,ottered • by one of the trustees of the old Cleveland Art . . . ., school. I returned to Kaine three years ago,spending the summer at Georgetown Maine,and there painted a number of Kaine •portraits",and then last summer I was at Vinalbaven,where I did another series of 11,aine piaintings,and I aa now at work on several others at this time,all ot which will be shown at Df1' Twenty s1.Xth or seventh annual show,all ot which hatJe taken place in If ew York,alwa7s,and f'roa which Df1' reputation as an American artist as well as an artist f(om 14a1ne,has radiated. I also bad shows in Berlin,London,IIUnich,Paris,Breslau and DJ,'esden--alas how different now all that world is,and the nl5ning and spirit ot art so crushed out ot existence.

Year and the essays are all on painting,the subJects being Leonardo da V1nc1,Hans M\emling,and Gaston Lachaise who was a very gifted sculptor who died three years aga,w&,. was until his death a resident of Georgetown,Kaine,where his widow.still llaintains the country home and has been coming to Maine herself tor thirt7 years,always to Georgetown.
