On motion of Mr Fessenden Ordered that the Committee on the Judiciary be instructed to inquire into the expediency of giving to the Municipal Court of the town of Portland the same Jurisdiction, with that exercised by the Justices of the Peace in actions of replevin -
Ordered that the same committee be instructed to inquire into the expediency of restraining or limiting the power exercised by the Supreme court in granting new trials solely on the ground that verdicts are against the weight of evidence.
The House resumed the consideration of the order introduced by Mr. Frost and on motion of Mr Kent the same was altered to a Resolve requiring the Cashiers of Banks to make returns of the names of Stockholders and the amount of Stock owned by them, which was read.
On Motion of Mr Carey - Ordered that the joint standing Committee on the Judiciary be directed to inquire if any and what alterations are necessary in the Act passed March 5th 1831. authorising the Inhabitants of the North District in the County of Washington to choose a Register of Deeds - sent up for concurrence.
On Motion of Mr. Clifford The House took up the consideration of the report of the Committee on contested elections on the remonstrance of Samuel Miller against the right of Moses Shaw to a seat in this House and so far accepted the same as to bring before the House the following Resolve -
Resolved that Moses Shaw is not entitled to a seat in this House - which was read and passed -
