This describes Rosa Bonheur's "The Horse Fair"!!! It appears that it was exhibited as part of the fourth annual exhibition of the Artists' Fund Society, a charitable society of artists organized to assist members and their families in illness and death. A writeup of the exhibition can be found in the NY Times, explaining that Bonheur's painting was not for sale but was one of a few works "kindly loaned by their owners to add to the attraction of the exhibition." It goes on to describe the painting, noting that "as the private property of a country gentleman it is generally excluded from public inspection." According to the Met's provenance records this must have been William P. Wright, Weehawken, N.J.

NOTE: The Met does not have information on this exhibiition in its exhibition history of this work!
