Accordingly the Governor attended by the Council, Secretary of State & Treasurer of State, preceded by the Sheriff of Cumberland came in, when the members of the Senate were first qualified by taking and subscribing the oaths and declarations required by the Constitution - after which the members of the House of Representatives aforenamed were also qualified by taking & subscribing the oaths and declarations required by the Constitution and laws of the State. The Governor & Council, Secretary & Treasurer &c then withdrew - The Senators also withdrew.
Ordered that Messrs McCobb of Phipsburg, Allen of Norridgewock, Mowry of Lubec, Page of Hallowell and Richardson of Portland be a Committee to receive sort & count the votes for a Clerk - and the votes being counted it appeared the whole number given in, was one hundred and twelve - necessary to a choice fifty seven - James L Child Esquire of Alna had ninety eight votes and was elected. He appeared signified his acceptance of that office and took & subscribed the following oath which was administered to him by the Chairman, "I James L Child, elected Clerk of the House of Representatives for the State of Maine for the current political year, do solemnly swear that I will faithfully and impartially discharge the duties of that office according to my best ability and discretion - So help me GOD."
The Clerk presided in the further organization of the House.
