send [Commanding?] send me up one of new [?] blanks

Head Quarters Sept 30th, 1861 Fort Corcoran, Va.

2nd Reg't Maine Volunteers

Sir

Lieut. Sumner R. Kittredge of Company D having been taken prisoner, and probably now in Richmond, you will please immediately appoint Stephen D Millett as 2nd Lieut to fill the vacancy. The enemy have ignominiously retreated from this vicinity and our troops are now in transit from Fort Corcoran to Richmond etc. I expect to move forward tomorrow.

I am sorry that I have so small a command and very much doubt the policy of sending from the State new regiments when none of the old ones are in numbers up to the army standard but the ball rolls on and if a man don't want to be crushed he must get out of its wake. When does Col. Goddard leave with the Cavalry? In Haste I remain

Very respectfully yours Chas W Roberts Col., 2nd Maine Regt
