4.00 JUDICIARY

4.01--Notaries Public. Created by Maine Constitution, Article VI, § 5.

Duties--administer oaths and certify all official acts for which they are authorized.

4.02--Justices of the Peace. Created by Maine Constitution, Article VI, § 5.

Duties--hold court in his county; exercise original and exclusive jurisdiction of all civil actions when debt or damages do not exceed $20.00, except those in which title estate is in question, and except in those towns with an established municipal or police court.
