The concentrations of these metabolites in bile remained constant for 192 h, suggesting that the metabolites could be used as biomarkers of rockfish exposure to petrogenic PAHs.The rise of global mean temperature has aroused wide attention in scientific communities. To reduce the negative climate change impact, the United Union's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) set a goal to limit global warming to 1.5 °C relative to pre-industrial levels based on the previous 2.0 °C target in October 2018. To understand the necessity of more stringent emission reduction, this study investigates the impacts of additional 0.5 °C global warming from 1.5 to 2.0 °C on global extreme precipitation, and especially its socioeconomic consequences. The extreme precipitation is represented by extreme precipitation frequency (R95pF), extreme precipitation percentage (R95pT), and maximum one-day precipitation (RX1day) as indicators, calculated based on daily precipitation data extracted from 29 Coupled Model Inter-comparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) global climate models (GCMs) under two representative concentration pathways RCP4.5 and RCP8.5. The exposures of economy and population to extreme p other regions. These findings could provide information for mitigation and adaptation policymaking. We still lack studies that provide evidence for direct links between the development of soil surface cryptogamic communities and soil attributes and functioning. This is particularly true in areas free of potentially confounding factors such as different soil types, land uses, or anthropogenic disturbances. Despite the ecological importance of polar ecosystems and their sensitivity to climate change, we are far from understanding how their soils function and will respond to climate change-driven alterations in above- and belowground features. We used two complementary approaches (i.e. cover gradients in the forefront of retreating glaciers as well as long-time deglaciated areas with well-developed cryptogamic cover types) to evaluate the role of cryptogams driving multiple soil biotic and abiotic attributes and functioning rates in polar terrestrial ecosystems. Increases in cryptogamic cover were consistently related to increases in organic matter accumulation, soil fertility, and bacterial diversity, but also in enhanced soil functioning rates in both sampling areas. However, we also show that the ability to influence soil attributes varies among different polar cryptogamic covers, indicating that their differential ability to thrive under climate-change scenarios will largely determine the fate of polar soils in coming decades.Over the last decades, the combined effects of global climate changes and severe land use modifications have been exacerbating river hydrological alterations and habitat fragmentation in many Mediterranean rivers. This trend is predicted to intensify, with expected significant impacts on taxonomic and functional diversity of benthic communities in the next future. By comparing perennial and intermittent reaches, the present research aims at investigating the role of flow intermittency, driven by the combined effects of climatic variables and land use changes, on benthic diatom communities in Mediterranean streams (NW Italy), by analysing data collected over 11 years. click here In order to avoid potential confounding effects related to water quality, sites characterized by "poor" or "bad" water quality were excluded a priori. We observed significant differences between permanent and intermittent sections in terms of both climatic variables and land use higher temperatures and lower precipitations, coupled with an extensive anthropic land use, intensify the natural flow intermittency in intermittent sites. This led to a significant decline in diatom species diversity, at both local and regional scales, and to changes to life history traits. In particular, communities of intermittent reaches were taxonomically and functionally different and less heterogeneous than assemblages characterizing perennial ones, showing higher percentages of small, mainly stalked and pioneer taxa belonging to the low profile guild. Conversely taxa colonizing permanent reaches were bigger, belonging to the high profile guild and able to produce colonies, thus indicating high environmental stability. Our results highlighted how hydrological alterations are profoundly threatening Mediterranean streams and the diatom communities inhabiting them, therefore representing an important benchmark in view of the improvement of biological indices for the assessment of intermittent rivers.
With the unprecedented urbanization light pollution has emerged as a ubiquitous problem, and there has been accumulating evidence on the links between exposure to light at night (LAN) and breast cancer risk. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies on the associations between LAN exposure and breast cancer risk.
We included all observational human studies wherein the exposure variable was LAN measured in indoor and outdoor environments, and the outcome was breast cancer. We employed summary relative risks (SRR) for breast cancer by comparing highest versus lowest categories of LAN exposure within a random-effects model. The National Toxicology Program's (NTP) Office of Health Assessment and Translation (OHAT) risk of bias rating tool was adopted to assess the risk of bias in individual studies and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) guideline was employed to assess confidence in the body of evidence.
A total 14 studies comprising fas consistently associated with higher breast cancer risk corroborating NTP's recommendations which anticipates excessive LAN as human carcinogen. The primary concentration and molecular process are critical to implement wastewater-based epidemiology for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). However, the previously developed methods were optimized for nonenveloped viruses. Few studies evaluated if the methods are applicable to the efficient recovery of enveloped viruses from various types of raw sewage. This study aims (1) to compare the whole process recovery of Pseudomonas phage φ6, a surrogate for enveloped viruses, among combinations of primary concentration [ultrafiltration (UF), electronegative membrane vortex (EMV), and polyethylene glycol precipitation (PEG)] and RNA extraction methods (spin column-based method using QIAamp Viral RNA Mini Kit and acid guanidinium thiocyanate-phenol-chloroform extraction using TRIzol reagent) for three types of raw sewage and (2) to test the applicability of the method providing the highest φ6 recovery to the detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA. Among the tested combinations, PEG+TRIzol provided the highest φ6 recovery ratio of 29.
