Film growth rates at different temperatures (from 400 to 700 °C), film thickness, crystalline quality, and surface morphology were investigated. The films deposited on quartz showed high transparency (above 80%) in the visible region and low carbon contamination on the surface (11-13% from XPS), which could easily be removed completely with 2 min of Ar+ sputtering.Severe haze episodes typically occur with concurrent high relative humidity. Here, the vital role of water in promoting the oxidation of SO2 by O2 on carbonaceous soot surfaces was identified at the atomic level by first-principles calculations. Water molecules can dissociate into surface hydroxyl groups through a self-catalyzed process under ambient conditions. The surface hydroxyl groups, acting as facilitators, can significantly accelerate the conversion of SO2 to SO3 (precursor of particulate sulfate) over soot aerosols by reducing the reaction barriers. Specifically, the hydroxyl groups activate the reactants and stabilize the transition states and products through hydrogen-bonding interactions, making the reactions both thermodynamically and kinetically more favorable at room temperature. The findings indicate that atmospheric humidity plays an important role in enhancing the atmospheric oxidation capacity, thus exacerbating SO2 oxidation and severe haze development. We report that block heterochiral analogs of the model amphipathic peptide KFE8 (Ac-FKFEFKFE-NH2), composed of two FKFE repeat motifs with opposite chirality, assemble into helical tapes with dimensions greatly exceeding those of their fibrillar homochiral counterparts. At sufficient concentrations, these tapes form hydrogels with reduced storage moduli but retain the shear-thinning behavior and consistent mechanical recovery of the homochiral analogs. Varying the identity of charged residues (FRFEFRFE and FRFDFRFD) produced similarly sized nonhelical tapes, while a peptide with nonenantiomeric l- and d-blocks (FKFEFRFD) formed helical tapes closely resembling those of the heterochiral KFE8 analogs. A proposed energy-minimized model suggests that a kink at the interface between l- and d-blocks leads to the assembly of flat monolayers with nonidentical surfaces that display alternating stacks of hydrophobic and charged groups.Density functional theory calculations were used to investigate the reaction mechanisms on [3 + 2] cycloaddition reactions of azides with metal carbyne complexes. Our results reveal that the formation of a 1,4-metallatriazole regioisomer is a kinetically favorable process in comparison with the formation of 1,5-metallatriazole. Aromaticity plays an important role in stabilizing the products in these reactions. Further analyses show that the electron-donating ligand on metal centers or the electron-withdrawing group on the azide could accelerate the [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction. All of these findings could be useful for experimental chemists to develop "click reactions" in organometallic chemistry.Unconventional extraction techniques including hydraulic fracturing or "fracking" have led to a boom in oil and gas production in the Eagle Ford shale play, Texas, one of the most productive regions in the United States. Nearly 400000 people live within 5 km of an unconventional oil or gas well in this largely rural area. Flaring is associated primarily with unconventional oil wells and is an increasingly common practice in the Eagle Ford to dispose of excess gas through combustion. Flares can operate continuously for months and release hazardous air pollutants such as particulate matter and volatile organic compounds in addition to causing light and noise pollution and noxious odors. We estimated ethnic disparities in exposure to flaring using satellite observations from the Visible Infrared Imaging Spectroradiometer between March 2012-December 2016. Census blocks with majority Hispanic (>60%) populations were exposed to twice as many nightly flare events within 5 km as those with less then 20% Hispanics. We found that Hispanics were exposed to more flares despite being less likely than non-Hispanic White residents to live near unconventional oil and gas wells. Our findings suggest Hispanics are disproportionately exposed to flares in the Eagle Ford shale, a pattern known as environmental injustice, which could contribute to disparities in air pollution and other nuisance exposures.Natural product chemistry, microbiology, and food, human, and plant metabolomics represent a few sources of complex metabolomics data generated by mass spectrometry. Among the medley of software tools used to handle these data sets, no universal tool can qualitatively, quantitatively, or statistically address major biological questions or tasks. CycloBranch 2, an open and platform-free software, at least now provides the de novo generation of molecular formulas of unknown compounds in both liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry and mass spectrometry imaging datafiles. For imaging files, this database-free approach was documented in the bimodal image fusion and characterization of three small molecules, including metallophores. The fine isotope ratio data filtering step distinguished 34S/13C2 and 41K/13C2 features. The standalone software package is implemented in C++ and can be downloaded from https//ms.biomed.cas.cz/cyclobranch/ and used under GNU General Public License.Carfilzomib (CFZ) is a second-generation proteasome inhibitor approved for treating relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (MM). The clinical formulation utilizing sulfobutylether-β-cyclodextrin to solubilize CFZ (Captisol, CFZ-CD) shows, however, short circulation time, lack of cell selectivity, and unmet antitumor efficacy. Here, we designed and prepared A6 peptide (sequence KPSSPPEE)-tagged core-disulfide-cross-linked biodegradable micelles (A6-PMs) for targeted CFZ therapy of CD44-overexpressing LP-1 human MM in vivo. A6-PMs had a small size of about 40 nm and stable CFZ encapsulation. CFZ-loaded micelles (CFZ-A6-PMs) showed a glutathione-triggered drug release profile with negligible drug leakage under physiological conditions. CFZ-A6-PMs displayed good proteasome activity inhibition and more potent apoptotic activity than CFZ-CD and nontargeted CFZ-PMs toward LP-1 MM cells in vitro. The in vivo fluorescence images revealed that Cy5-labeled A6-PMs induced much higher tumor accumulation than the nontargeted Cy5-labeled PMs control.
