Data were censored based on injury outcomes and the number of tests conducted on each specimen. Parametric survival analysis was used to derive IARCs for cervical thoracic junction force-, moment-, and interaction-based lower neck injury criterion (LNic).

Injuries were scored according to the Abbreviated Injury Scale scheme. Abbreviated Injury Scale 1 or 2 was scored as injured. The 50% risk levels for the Hybrid III ATD were 315 N, 70 Nm, and 1.12 for the cervical thoracic A/P shear force-, sagittal plane extension moment-, and LNic-based injury criterion, respectively. Results for the THOR ATD were 261 N, 69 Nm, and 1.51.

The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the feasibility of a phototherapy kiosk (PK) to engage community adults in health promotion and to stimulate production of circulating 25-hydroxyvitamin (OH)D as effectively as a vitamin D3 oral supplement (OS). Although optimal production of vitamin D comes from sun exposure, ultraviolet B radiation with a wavelength of 290 to 320 nm penetrates exposed skin and may produce vitamin D3 using a PK.

A prospective study was conducted with adults randomized to either six PK treatments or D3 OS for 10 weeks. Serum 25(OH)D was drawn at baseline, 10 weeks, and 14 weeks. Primary outcome was serum 25(OH)D level. Mann-Whitney test was used to assess continuous data and Chi squared test for pairwise comparisons of categorical data. Significance was set at P < .05.

With 18% attrition, final sample size was 88; OS, n = 45, PK, n = 43. Sample was mostly female (60%), median age 35 years, with no differences observed between groups for age, race/ethnicity, marital status, military affiliation, or season of enrollment. Median daily intake of calcium and vitamin D was well below the recommended daily allowance for each nutrient, and group. Baseline median serum 25(OH)D levels were similar. By 10 weeks, PK median level was 30 ng/mL (interquartile range [IQR] 25.8-37.0) and OS was 26 ng/mL (IQR 21.5-30.5), P = .02. The difference in 25(OH)D levels persisted at 14 weeks; the PK group returned to baseline, 27 ng/mL (IQR 22.0-32.5), and OS group declined to 21 ng/mL (IQR 17.0-30.0), P = .02.

The U.S. Navy Medicine has a long history of conducting global health missions that foster international diplomacy through medical knowledge exchange with a goal of increasing partner nation's health care capacity. Pacific Partnership is an annual U.S. Navy-sponsored joint operation that enhances medical collaboration with participating nations throughout the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. Since 2015, a U.S. Navy Cardiology team has conducted a structural heart disease interventional workshop focused on congenital heart disease with the cardiologists at the Da Nang General Hospital, Da Nang, Vietnam. Herein, we describe the multinational collaborative project including the patient registry we developed to monitor the short- and long-term outcomes of structural heart disease interventions preformed during Pacific Partnership 2015 and 2016.

Our team developed a sustainable procedural registry with the goal of following the long-term outcomes of cardiac interventions for congenital heart disease in Vietnamese pat of outcomes for cardiac interventions. Notably, treated patients experienced symptomatic improvement without significant long-term procedural complications. Following patients longitudinally across medical missions is of recognized importance but remains a difficult objective to achieve for a multitude of factors including administrative and financial burdens on both the medical systems and the patients of host nations. Despite these limitations, longitudinal follow-up of patient care facilitated by a patient registry has a vital role in monitoring the quality of care provided and should be an integral part of all future global medical missions.

Military operations often involve intense exposure to stressors combined with acute sleep deprivation, while military personnel also experience high prevalence of chronic sleep deficiency from insomnia and other sleep disorders. However, the impact of acute and chronic sleep deficiency on physiologic stressor responses is poorly understood. In a controlled laboratory study with normal sleepers and individuals with chronic sleep-onset insomnia, we measured responses to an acute stressor administered in a sleep deprivation condition or a control condition.

Twenty-two adults (aged 22-40 years; 16 females)-11 healthy normal sleepers and 11 individuals with sleep-onset insomnia-completed a 5-day (4-night) in-laboratory study. After an adaptation day and a baseline day, subjects were assigned to a 38-hour total sleep deprivation (TSD) condition or a control condition; the study ended with a recovery day. At 800 PM after 36 hours awake in the sleep deprivation condition or 12 hours awake in the control conditionnditions.

Short response time is critical for future military medical operations in austere settings or remote areas. Such effective patient care at the point of injury can greatly benefit from the integration of semi-autonomous robotic systems. To achieve autonomy, robots would require massive libraries of maneuvers collected with the goal of training machine learning algorithms. Although this is attainable in controlled settings, obtaining surgical data in austere settings can be difficult. Hence, in this article, we present the Dexterous Surgical Skill (DESK) database for knowledge transfer between robots. The peg transfer task was selected as it is one of the six main tasks of laparoscopic training.
