were in favour of shaking off the shackels [sic] of the old State & setting us free - and I feel my self as Pledged to support the Credit & destiny [?] of the State of Maine and all measures adopted for her welfare by the officers of the Government, I have firmly believed for some years that it would be for Interest [Intent?] of Maine to be a separate Government.

I have not seen any thing to alter my oppinion [sic] but my belief is [?] that it is best it should be so - in this Belief I am opposed by the Citizens of this Town - they were violently opposed to separation James Bailey Esqr & myself were the only advocates for it in Columbia,

in the list of nominations I sent you, I omitted Jeh. Bucknam & Holmes Nash who had Coms. as Justices of Peace & David Wass for Coroner in my district & Elisha [?] Whitney Esqr by his request that his Brother Abel might be appointed - Wm. Ware the Coroner is nearly seventy years old & [?] & Messrs Bucknam & Nash were strongly opposed to separation
