Aitteon was lieut [struck through]-governor at the time when the office was held for life. After Neptune's death he became governor [entire sentence struck through]. He was the father of Joe Aitteon; lived at Mattynawcook. He was not the [two struck through] a "blue eyed Indian" as Dillingham says - that was Orono [three struck through] - so Williamson

He was a large man of fine figure & always wore a long broadcloth? cloak with a collar of dark red made of the shaggy end of broadcloth.

Joe Aitteon, the son, Thoreau's guide was drowned in Grand Falls, West Branch (near Fowler's) July 4. 1870

Lt. Gov. John's tombstone says he was the son of Aitteon, that is of the old chief often called "Acteon" by misprint -
