Franceway Peneas
Clara Neptune says that old Franceway killed three pedlars for their packs. Her aunt refused to sleep in his house, "felt like some one would kill her." Man stopped there, big man, paid nothin, said he felt all night like something coming. When dark felt like some one taking hold of him. When he went out of door he backed out [two underlined]. When old Franceway died it took three men to hold him. Says "If I don't goin' kill three of 'em I don't go det devil."
For stories of Franceway Peneas see my red woods note book, under pages for Oct 2, Dec 23 & Dec 27 - This tells of his tanning moosehide, his "catching hornbeams" etc.
Joe thought he died about 1881, totally blind
